Legos virtuels rendus avec LeoCAD et Pov-Ray

Introduction

Pour construire des legos, il y a plusieurs façons de faire :

La première est d'acheter en magasin des modèles prêts à l'emploi. Leur complexité est variable et le temps de montage peut être long (surtout pour les versions techniques).
La seconde est de commander des pièces détachées mais il convient d'abord d'en connaître la liste, ainsi que les quantités et couleurs souhaitées.
En allant sur BuildWithChrome.com, on peut construire le monde avec des briques standards mais c'est un peu limité.
Choisir un logiciel de construction virtuelle de modèles.

Ce dernier choix est celui qui nous intéresse ici.

Les logiciels pour bureau

Les logiciels gratuits possibles sont au nombre de quatre :

Lego® Digital Designer (officiel)
ML-CAD
LeoCAD
BrickSmith (pour Macintosh®)

Le choix premier se porte sans soucis pour LeoCAD malgré le manque de certaines fonctionnalités et son ergonomie pas toujours très bien pensée. Ses atouts sont son existence (depuis une dizaine d'années et toujours maintenu), sa compacité (45 Mo en tout), sa rapidité d'exécution (pas besoin de décompresser LDraw en 30000 fichiers) et son export vers d'autres formats. En seconde place, ML-CAD a l'atout de pouvoir afficher un aperçu modeste des pièces dans une liste, ce qui est pratique si vous ne connaissez pas la pièce et si un site ne vous indique pas la réponse.

LDraw est un projet en ligne visant à mettre à disposition la bibliothèque complète des pièces plastiques utilisées dans les legos. Elle se compose d'un pack officiel et d'un pack moins officiel qui devra être téléchargé pour ajouter les manquants (comme l'ancienne moto de police). Ceci fait que les logiciels suivent automatiquement les évolutions de ces packs.

La mise à disposition des packs de pièces et des couleurs est très pratique pour réaliser des maquettes et passer (pourquoi pas) à la conception assistée par ordinateur (CAD). Seulement, il faut se rendre à l'évidence que ce travail est plutôt fastidieux et que la pratique réelle est nettement plus divertissante.

Si vous arrivez à concevoir un modèle, il est possible de le présenter ensuite sur le site Lego® Ideas afin de le faire connaître, validant de fait la nécessité de tels logiciels (modulo le travail gratuit).

S'il vous vient à l'esprit un jour de tenter la modélisation des 2606 pièces du modèle technique 42009, bon courage ! Une personne est allée jusqu'à modéliser le plus cher des legos, à savoir l'Ultimate collector's millennium falcon (modèle technique 10179) de 5195 pièces !

Scènes rendues avec Pov-Ray

La scène utilisée est constituée de modèles ayant existé et qui ont depuis été remplacés par des modèles améliorés (exemple: 6348 en 60044). On y voit un accident de voiture tout près d'un quartier général de la police. Les médias sont dépêchés sur place ainsi que des renforts policiers. Pendant ce temps, les travaux d'installation d'une grue continuent, une cliente va s'acheter une pizza et un monsieur fait du 4x4 dans l'eau.

Scène de legos

LeoCAD ne permet pas de faire un rendu lumineux digne des règles de la physique. En utilisant l'export vers le logiciel Pov-Ray, il est alors possible d'utiliser un rendu de lumière plus conforme, notamment sur la transparence des objets, les ombres et la projection spatiale des objets. N'ayant pas de studio-lumière, le rendu que nous verrons est d'une rigolotte simplicité. Normalement, l'utilisation de textures permet d'avoir quelque chose un peu plus joli qu'une couleur unie.

Scène principale en perspective

La scène peut être vue de deux côtés opposés. Si vous êtes joueur, vous pouvez chercher quel objet a été modifié entre les deux photos :

Il y a quelque chose que les vendeurs de téléviseurs aiment bien vous dire : "Achetez de la 4K". Sachant que la 8K arrivera bientôt, l'exercice a consisté à générer une image 8K native de 7680 pixels par 4320 pixels. Il aura fallu très exactement 90 minutes pour générer cette image UHD (ultra haute définition).

Attention : l'image pèse 4 Mo et contient 33 millions de pixels.

Du coup, avoir un téléviseur 4K ou 8K, c'est bien si de bout en bout le flux est diffusé dans cette qualité. Pour un film d'animation durant 1 heure 45 minutes, il faut compter 151200 images, soit 578 Go d'images brutes PNG non compressées et 25,9 années-coeur de calcul (au maximum).

Vue fisheye

Le rendu fisheye permet d'avoir un grand angle de vision et donc d'afficher plus de choses que sur un objectif classique. Généralement limité à 180° dans la vraie vie, la vue suivante s'ouvre à 190° pour avoir un peu de sol. C'est la magie de Pov-Ray d'être capable de calculer des projections.

On a l'impression d'être comme une taupe à l'affût de ce qui se passe à l'extérieur.

Dans le même genre, nous avons le fisheye large mais pas trop. Alors notre équipe de journalistes, dont la caméra est montée sur l'hélicoptère, est capable de filmer la scène de l'accident avec un grand angle de 120°. Ceci explique pourquoi les lignes droites sont déformées en périphérie d'image.

Contre-plongée

Si à cause de la perspective initiale, vous n'étiez pas sûr que l'hélicoptère était bien en vol, une vision du sol devrait permettre de remettre les choses en perspective.

Ces journalistes sont vraiment en quête de scoops et de sensations, même pour un banal (mais tragique) accident entre deux legos. Arrivés avant l'ambulance, ils pourraient avoir au moins la délicatesse d'évacuer le blessé. Ah, on me dit dans l'oreillette que la police est déjà là...

Scènes de vie

Cet accident en plein carrefour est un vrai soufflet pour le conducteur du poids-lourd déjà pressé et en route pour aller chercher sa cargaison. Doubler ne servira à rien. Dans cet exemple, la transparence du pare-brise est très longue à calculer, et d'autant plus qu'il y a de nombreux objets dans l'axe de la perspective :

Le prisonnier est enfermé dans sa cellule par un policier conduisant le véhicule tout-terrain du commissariat. L'absence de textures et de lumières additionnelles illustrent la faiblesse de l'image en terme d'émotions :

La caméra de sécurité en fisheye (120°) de la pizzeria (qui n'existe pas dans le modèle) assure la sécurité de la cliente et du pizzaiolo au cas où le paiement de la pizza fasse à la cliente l'effet d'une indigestion. Ici, l'affichage en noir et blanc est appliqué après le rendu-final :

Inventaire des modèles et des pièces

La scène utilise les modèles suivants. L'usage de certains ont été modifiés de façon à ne pas avoir uniquement des véhicules de police, mais des citoyens.
